What is Reclouder?

Reclouder is a portable audio recorder that connects to your microphone, instrument and camera. Music China 2019

It was during Music China last week that Reclouder received its first award. On the largest music technology & instruments trade show worldwide in Shanghai, Reclouder was named "Most Innovative Newcomer".

What are the major difficulties in live recording?

Recording live music is time consuming and complex. You will need on-site recording equipment and the support of a skilled engineer to ensure quality. We register these three major challenges for an average musician when recording live music:

For a musician it can be frustrating. When you decide to do it yourself the final results can lead to a lot of disappointment. This makes musicians completely dependent on expensive equipment, the know-how of external engineers and producers in post-production.

We see recording as a service. In the past you could hire an engineer or try yourself. Now you have the ability to  use our cloud service and hardware unit to do the job for you. Music Has Value

We at Reclouder work on multiple projects with the motto “music has value”. Our goal is to develop hardware, software and cloud solutions that benefit you as an independent creator in the monetisation of your creative craft. In other words, we highly respect creative work and the people behind it and we want to develop tools that simplify your workflow and provide direct monetisation opportunities of that creative work.

The Start

In the beginning of 2019 we were working on the promotion of one of those projects, We had decided to shoot a video with multiple cameras and a live band on stage in a venue.

By doing so we found out that setting up a recording environment for multiple sound sources (like a band) and with multiple camera angles was complex and time consuming. 

We found that all available solutions where centralised solutions. With this we mean that we needed one single operator that had the expertise and experience to work with such a recording system. 

Besides spending our own precious time, it costs a lot of extra money to hire such an educated person. Most of the time these are audio engineers who are actually more into live sound than recording that live sound. Or more into studio production work than live sound recording. 

We asked ourselves, maybe that is the reason why there is not that much high quality live music available online. At the same time the live experience is the best experience of music.

The Solution

That is why we came up with a solution that is easy to operate by any creator. A solution that fits both the workflow of a musician as well as a cinematographer. A solution that offers recording of live music without any technical knowledge. A device and workflow that saves time, money and gives access to the entire production process to any creator no matter the level of technical knowledge. When more creators can record more live performances it leads to more content, more potential revenue, and a growing fanbase.

Along the way we found that especially for filmmakers there is a need for prograde preamps. While they have expensive cameras and professional mics, most of the time they use inferior quality preamps of the camera. 

The Core of Reclouder

Reclouder is in essence a portable field stereo recorder. A smart preamp with versatile connectors. It functions as a lossless audio thru box to integrate in a live music environment and between a mic and a camera. Without setting up extra wiring. 

It allows you as a creator to keep using your professional instruments and tools. It is a clever recording box that is as easy to operate as a stompbox. From our point of view every sound related creator needs a Reclouder as primary gear and every creator must be able to operate such a device easily.

What makes Reclouder different to any other recording device is the decentralised approach. With the latest Bluetooth Mesh networking technology you can link multiple devices and record and sync multi sound sources. Be aware! There is no audio over Bluetooth. The wireless bluetooth network is only there to link and sync multiple Reclouders. 

You can record any form of audio with Reclouder as a standalone unit or in a recording network. You must control this recording network with our user-friendly mobile app. This app is to control the network. Again. Reclouder is a hardware recorder. We do not record on a mobile device nor do we push audio over Bluetooth.

With Reclouder you can record a potentially endless amount of channels in multitrack. You will record on the integrated SD card first. This way, also when using battery power, you can literally record everywhere. We do not force you into recording in a Wi-Fi environment nor the need to connect to a power source. Reclouder is about freedom and making your own decisions that suit your workflow best. When connected to your preferred Wi-Fi the recorded files we automatically be uploaded to a cloud session.

The Amazing Part

We chose to develop a cloud service for several reasons. The monetisation of creative work is always connected to the digital and online domain. Back in the days we listened to music on vinyl and recorded both audio and video on tape and film. Today we consume massive amounts of audiovisual material from huge cloud libraries. We believe the next step will be that this will be implemented in the creation process. The future is right around the corner with the Internet of Things, decentralised blockchain technology and 5G mobile networks. We believe that Reclouder fits exactly those trends and therewith is the future-ready solution to recording audio.

Music China Show 2019

Music China 2019 will take place between 10 and 13 October 2019 in Shanghai.  With China being one of the largest consumer market in the world, it is the leading trade show for musical instruments in Asia. Over 110,000 visitors from more than 81 countries and regions crowded into Music China 2018 to source for the latest market’s favourites. 

It has been officially announced by Music China that Reclouder will receive the award for "most innovative product first release" during Music China 2019.  As stated by the organisation:

Welcome to the cloud

We have been developing our dedicated cloud service in the past months. The purpose of the Reclouder cloud is to offer you a dynamic environment to store, share and process your audio recordings. The cloud is a place that offers up-to-date services to enhance your audio recordings and to work on a project as an individual, in a team and as a band.

With Reclouder’s hardware you can record audio in the best quality. With Reclouder’s cloud service you can store, share and enhance these recordings. The ultimate goal is to offer you a hybrid solution that makes recording audio simple and offers the best technological solutions to deliver the highest quality of work, no matter the level of expertise. We want to offer every creator the opportunity to create high quality audio productions.

The cloud future

Ultimately the cloud becomes an environment where your recordings are stored, processed and distributed. How much and which parts of the cloud service you will use, that is entirely up to you. If you are an expert audio engineer you can grab the recordings and process them in your DAW or video production software. If you are an amazing musician but absolutely non-technical you can invite your local expert to the cloud session to grab the recordings and process them. 

You can also invite a connected engineer through the online marketplace. And distribute your recordings to any platform to monetise your creative work and use effective online tools for audio processing.

Getting feedback

We started our Facebook page in June 2019 with the intention to go public with our recording solution and get as much feedback from potential users as we could. At the one hand, we wanted to test our idea and concept with the general public. At the other hand, we were looking for feedback to give direction to the development of our hardware recorder, mobile app and cloud service.

Today we offer a complete overview of Reclouder on our dedicated website. We are working with an international team to produce the first video and start the crowdfunding campaign in October 2019. Also we've created a Facebook Group and Instagram account to extend our and get more feedback. We even started to share our story on Medium, and got already a dozen of mentions in the online press ranging from Ask.Audio to diyphotography.net.

We have shared a lot about what Reclouder is. In short it is simply the best way to record audio outside of your studio. We've received much positive feedback. Many profound questions. Along the way we cleared a lot of misunderstandings and misconceptions about our product and services. We have enjoyed the conversations we've had so far and deeply appreciate the commitment we've experienced from the global community of creators. This blog is about exactly that interaction. The eight things Reclouder is not, as taken from our conversations online.

Eight (8) things Reclouder is NOT!

We are aware of the short time span the average netizen has today. That is why we just give you this short list without any further explanation.

5. Reclouder is not a replacement for a (live) mixing console

The decision is up to you!

Reclouder is not a scam! Occasionally we receive strange feedback on our social advertisements. Sometimes it is from people that don't believe we can record an entire band with our device. In most cases they just misunderstood our workflow and the ability to link multiple devices with Bluetooth Mesh Networking technology. We also consider that people intend to distrust anything that is connected with cloud services and ironically are eager to share that on Facebook. More about that later. We can honestly tell you that Reclouder is not a scam. We are in an early stage of development and preparing our crowdfunding campaign. This means that we still run into issues and complications while testing our prototypes and developing our cloud service. We do not have all the answers, but are more than willing to get them.

Reclouder is not a toy! As soon as people understand that we can record a live band on stage or a multi-camera project by using multiple Reclouders in a recording network, some people get a bit angry, frustrated or fearful. As we promote being an easy solution that can be operated by anyone, we get ourselves into a bit of trouble with a few dedicated experts. We understand that people see a mobile app, the mention of Bluetooth and a single-click operation workflow and say: "compared to what I have , that is a toy". We are aware that comparing sizes happens more often between males. We've developed our own pro-grade preamp and a new approach to recording audio with a reason. As we like to mention we record "decentralised" with a "hybrid" recording solution. We make recording audio accessible for a wide range of creators and why doing so we will always keep in mind: "keep it simple". Simple is not a synonym for toy. That is not what we are aiming at. We are aiming to make recording of audio and multitrack available for as much musicians and creators as we can. Therefore, we believe, it is mandatory, that we keep it simple, easy to digest and effective.

Reclouder is not an audio over Bluetooth recorder! This is a mistake commonly made. As soon as people read about Bluetooth, they think of their Bluetooth speakers and the problems it has transferring proper audio signals from their mobile phone to it. We understand that sending audio over Bluetooth is an inferior solution (at this moment). That is why we do NOT send audio over Bluetooth. We use Bluetooth to link multiple Reclouders and "control" the recording network and process. We record on every single Reclouder itself and upload all recorded content to a cloud session. From here it is synced and made available for post-production and audio enhancement.

Reclouder is not a content grabber that steals your copyrights! We have heart this a few times on our Facebook channel. It seems people are afraid that we steal the content they create. Although, in theory, it might be possible, it is in no way connected to our vision and ideas. Please allow me to explain. Our team is a dedicated group of music industry and technology veterans. We strongly believe that music has value. We see that with the success of streaming services the profits are not shared evenly with all creators. The current situation gives power to a few DSPs (streaming services) and a few record labels (The big 5). Our vision is to bring back the value of music and give that power to the people. The creators! That is a vision we might never reach, but it is in our intention to bring forward this motto in every aspect of our development. 

Reclouder is not a replacement for a (live) mixing console! We have had much feedback from sound engineers and technicians that understand how to operate a mixing console. Of course there are mixing consoles on the market that can record multitrack for a decent price level. We are aware of that. We did not develop Reclouder to replace this mixing console. Actually Reclouder is developed to operate beside a live mixing console. It is build to work as a lossless audio thru-box on stage. You can connect your mic or instrument and link the output to the console without losing audio quality. Therewith it integrates in your existing setup. We've build Reclouder to open up live music recording for a wide range of musicians and creators. For people who cannot operate such a mixing console and need to hire an expert to make that happen. For them, we now offer Reclouder.

Reclouder is not comparable with recording on your mobile phone! On a few occasions people laugh about our value proposition and say "why should I need that, I can just record on my mobile phone". Yes, you can! And as long as you record a digital signal into this digital device and not convert this signal, you should be fine. This is not what we do with Reclouder. Reclouder is made to convert an analog signal to a digital signal and store this in the Reclouder. In other words, Reclouder is dedicated to get the best out of your microphone or instrument. The AD-conversion of any smartphone is inferior to what Reclouder delivers. Furthermore Reclouder comes with a dedicated pro-grade preamp and phantom power to get the richest sound out of the majority of dynamic, condensor and video microphones. This quality can only be delivered with a smartphone if you connect an external audio interface.

Reclouder is not an audio interface! We have people making the comparison with an audio interface. It connects with the request to have more inputs and outputs on Reclouder. There are many audio interfaces on the market. The big difference between mixing consoles, multitrack recorders, audio interfaces and Reclouder is the difference between centralised solutions and decentralised solutions. An interface merges multiple signals into a central point and converts this back to speakers or headphones. This way an audio interface converts analog to digital and after processing in a computer back to analog. Reclouder is only focussed on capturing the best sound and convert this to a digitally stored file without the use of a computer. The computer is not made to travel or be used on stage. An audio interface links sound to a computer. With Reclouder you don't need that. You do not need to know how to operate a computer or an audio interface. You simple connect your wires to Reclouder and press record. Reclouder operates as standalone and makes it possible to record anytime, anywhere.

Reclouder is not replacing the sound engineer! It is no secret that this has been one of the biggest discussions we've encountered during the first three months of project Reclouder. For the last two months we have been sharing that all these crazy cool technologies are merged in this magnificent portable device. The way our decentralised solution connects with the changes that are happening in the online world. We tried to convince everybody that our solution is the best.

Discussions with experienced people about traditional solutions like mixing consoles. In discussions with musicians and videographers who mastered the skill of multitrack recording.

Cloud Vision

Once upon a time people recorded and listened to music using tapes and vinyl. Until this day audiophiles still believe this delivers the best quality in recorded music. In the past 50 years a lot has changed, but these methods are still valid and widely used. 

New technology did arrive. The production process is changing. With a laptop and a variety of software, bedroom producers became a valuable source for audio production.

Meanwhile listeners followed a fascinating path along new forms and mediums. From vinyl we went to walkmans. From walkmans we arrived at iPods. With a disrupting decade of illegal downloads, finally, the streaming services arrived. The music industry is recovering and it is cloud-based. What will be next?

Today

Today the listening experience is focused on cloud services. It provides an easy-to-use, low-entry, sponsored or subscription form of music consumption. We see this in many shapes in the entertainment industry with a leading role for the gaming industry (Steam), closely followed by films and series (Netflix) and music (Spotify, Apple Music)

On the production side the immense development of technology has been a real game-changer. The fast evolution of hard- & software pushed the production process forward. New styles of music emerged along the way. It made music production easy accessible and today more and more people engage with the creation of music. 

At the same time we see that few techniques survive the ravages of time. That is evolution. Survival of the fittest. A cross-breed of the old and the new, delivering improved forms, carried out by creators and consumers. That is why we say: "Let’s go hybrid!"

We create the future. Change is happening all the time. Streaming as a consumer of audio and video is the new norm. The internet of things (IoT) and 5G mobile networks (5G) are just a next step. The cost of chipsets and cloud space are getting cheaper and cheaper rapidly. We believe that the future of recording audio is cloud-based, and it is already happening.

Your Daily Life In The Cloud

Currently there are already many cloud-based services that are part of your daily routine. For instance with Google Drive you can store files, share documents and collaborate online. Google Docs transformed the well-known Microsoft Office into a virtual office in the cloud. Today it has become a regular thing in any business or industry to collaborate in documents (Word), spreadsheets (Excel) and presentations (Powerpoint).

Dropbox is another company that is taking its cloud service to the next level. With dropbox you can save files online and synchronise those files on different devices. It is easy to share them or add them to your email and so on. With additional services as Dropbox Paper task management, creative briefing and time management are taken into an online environment in the cloud.

Last but not least we like to point out the versatile solution by Apple: iCloud. With iCloud you can synchronise contacts, calendars and documents. iCloud stores music, apps, photos, notes and even diaries to secure your data as a back-up system and synchronises them among your (Apple) devices. If something changes on one device, all other devices are updated automatically and wirelessly.

Of course there are many other cloud services available. We would like to investigate them specifically in the audio industry.

What about creative clouds?

For consumers of music and video there are already many cloud solutions available. Actually it delivered an extreme change in consumption of digital entertainment. Services like Soundcloud, Spotify and YouTube need no further discussion. We have seen online collaboration initiatives like Bandlab, Soundtrap, Jamkazam, and many others using cloud-based software tools in many different forms. Also there are specific cloud services for audio processing and online documentation. Let us walk through a few of them to get a better understanding.  

Avid Cloud Solutions offers several cloud-based solutions for creative individuals and media teams attached to their hardware products. With their cloud services they improve the workflow for collaboration and simplify logistics, management, distribution and storage of media files such as audio and video.

Roland Cloud is a cloud-based suite of software synthesizers, drum machines, and sampled instruments. The idea is that any subscriber always has access to the latest updated versions of Roland’s software instruments. Besides being always up-to-date, Roland Cloud also aims to be a worldwide community of music enthusiasts, creators and producers developing and sharing new sounds and ideas.

The essence of Reclouder

Reclouder is in essence an SD recorder. It functions as a lossless audio thru-box as well. This means that you can record the same signal that is injected into the live sound. For instance, while musicians play on stage, Reclouder records and the audience enjoys. Whenever Reclouder connects with Wi-Fi, it will automatically upload the recordings in the cloud. From the cloud you can select the best recordings for processing and forward this to your production engineer. Or download it to process in your favourite DAW. You can also link multiple Reclouders with bluetooth, control it with your smartphone and record in multiple sound sources at once. 

Reclouder and video production

Reclouder allows videographer to focus on shooting video and at the same time, with a quick setup, you can get premium audio recordings without complicated operations. As a videographer you connect any mic you already own, adjust the gain and start recording. The auto gain feature will make sure you always get the perfect audio file. In addition, especially for multi-camera recording, there is not any wireless solution in the market that allows you to synchronise multitrack audio recording that easily.

Reclouder Cloud Service

If you want to record audio for music or video it is common that you bring an engineer along or compromise on quality. With Reclouder you can easily set up your audio recording system and focus on your music or shooting video. What it essentially does is record audio together with your best microphones, equipment and instruments. It is an additional value to your current setup and workflow.

You must have read this term quite often on our website, blog and social channels. We think you deserve a complete and full explanation from us.

If you investigate audio recording you will notice that every setup is build from a centralized way of thinking. Consider live mixing consoles, audio interfaces and portable multitrack recordings. They all have one thing in common. They are designed to direct your recording signals to one device: controlled, operated and owned by one person.

While designing Reclouder we took in account the final stage of your music business. It is the monetisation and collection of royalties generated by your songs. With Reclouder we considered that every member, every sound source, can have a different creator or audio input associated with it. This is not mandatory. That is how we keep Reclouder versatile. We think in solutions, but we do not force them upon you. You are free to choose whatever fits your workflow.

You can use Reclouder as a centralized solution and operate it as a sound engineer. No problem. On the other hand you can use it for recording live music as a band itself. Every band member then operates one Reclouder.

With our top grade Bluetooth technology - compliant with Bluetooth v4.2 BR/EDR and BLE specifications - you can create a potentially endless network of Reclouders, connected peer-2-peer,  easily controlled with your mobile device while using our simple yet effective mobile application.

You can record on the removable SD cards first and, when connected with wifi, our hybrid device automatically stores and syncs your recordings in the cloud. From the cloud you can instantly share the recorded files with your best sound engineer, producer or grant access to VIPs, co-workers and band members. Our cloud service is constantly evolving. You can expect more features and services to arrive in the future. 

As we like to keep your options open, you can control the recording process directly from the hardware device or with our mobile app. Both with one single touch. It is as easy as a breeze. Hybrid

Hybrid is indeed some kind of fancy word. Hybrid is used in cars that run on fossil fuel and electric power. Hybrid solutions are a way to adjust and transfer from one traditional form to a new innovative form. It is an in between solution. It stands for transition. What does that mean?

We offer you a traditional solution to recording audio. While we do that, we add several exciting technologies, ranging from bluetooth to wifi, to create a new approach to recording audio.

We strongly believe this is the future and while we are already streaming as a consumer, you are getting ready to stream as a creator. The internet of things and 5G mobile networks are just a small next step in that direction and Reclouder is just the beginning of your adjustment to this. With Reclouder you are ready for the IoT revolution in the recorded music industry.

Breaking down Reclouder hardware

To give you better insights in development decisions we’ve made, we compared Reclouder with another fairly new recording device. Please note that we do not want to bash this product. Actually, we think it is a clever product which we would recommend in particular cases. What we try to do is give you a better understanding of the choices we’ve made based on the features and specification of our hardware device.

The Mixerface R4R is a USB audio interface with independent inputs and monitor controllers. It can be used as a mini-mixer. Reclouder is different. It can record multiple channels in a wireless recording network. This network consists out of multiple hardware units and is scalable to a potentially endless number of channels, thus hardware units. Every Reclouder offers a flexible set of inputs creating an all-round solution with dedicated focus on hybrid recording of high quality audio.

Reclouder offers several pricing solutions for your multichannel recording project. The first one is a special price for early adopters. The other one is a bundle package when you purchase multiple units. We would like to inform you further on this subject, but you’d have to be a bit more patient.

To ensure the wireless and wifi capabilities of Reclouder we chose to build our device with a sturdy hard plastic casing. Any grade of metal or aluminium, as used in the Mixerface R4R, will interfere with the wireless signals.

Reclouder is designed for live music and video projects. For recording music related projects, you can connect your dynamic or phantom power (+48v) condenser microphone or line signal to a Reclouder unit and expand the number of units in your wireless recording network if you desire more channels.

You have one dedicated combo input that can record mono (mic) and stereo (line). We’ve added a combo mic/line lossless audio thru option, especially useful for recording live music with a PA mixer. As you might have noticed there is no instrument input. We designed Reclouder as a microphone thru box. For guitar and bass players this means you either connect your pedalboard or your amp output on stage. This will keep your live recordings close to the original live sound your audience is experiencing.

Reclouder is also suitable for single and multi-camera projects with one single or multiple sound sources. With plug-in power and two 3.5 mini-jack inputs you can connect two video microphones, or lavaliers and even a video condenser mic. This offers a wide range of applications for videographers.

As you noticed there is no USB data connector and only a record button on the hardware unit. This is done deliberately. Reclouder is not an audio interface nor an audio player. Reclouder focuses on recording audio. You can monitor the results of your recording using a headphone or through our mobile app. We offer a dedicated gain control and an ultra precise 8 LED level monitor to do the job for you.
